Sweet Magnolias is back with a second season and with more dramatic twists than season one. In season one we are introduced to the small, fictionalized town of Serenity, North Carolina, and three childhood best friends; Maddie Townsend (Joanna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley). We watch as the three women navigate parenthood, relationships and careers.
Maddie Townsend navigates learning to co-parent her three children with her soon to be ex-husband, Bill (Chris Klein), while also being the talk of the town. You see, Dr. Bill had an affair with his nurse, Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), and got her pregnant.
Dana Sue has her own teenage daughter to manage, while running a successful restaurant in town, and also finding her way around dating while being separated from her Husband, Ronnie (Brandon Quinn).
Helen, too, suffers a breakdown of her own relationship when her significant other is quite set on not having children, and seems to become a deal breaker when they come to an impasse of Helen wanting to be a mother and Ryan (Michael Shenefelt) being decidedly against parenthood.
The women have a weekly ritual meeting for drinks to "pour it out." It's their own private therapy session with one another. They pour some drinks, pour out their hearts, and advise each other as best as they can.
The women decide to go into business together when Helen purchases what was a special place for them during their adolescence, Miss Frances Wingate's home. They turn it into The Corner Spa, a women's retreat.
Maddie begins dating her eldest son, Ty's, high school baseball coach. Noreen eventually leaves Bill. Helen seems to be hitting it off with one of the chef's at Dana Sue's restaurant. Dana Sue juggles a mildly renelling teenage daughter, dating, and her career. Oh, and also being careful confronted by one of her new cooks about possibly being his biological mother. All of this while there are children also are going through situations of their own. Maddie's youngest boy has a crush on Dana Sue's daughter, while Dana Sue's daughter has a crush on Maddie's eldest boy. This turmoil ends with Maddie's youngest in the hospital with the mayor's daughter after stealing his brother's car and crashing.
Season two opens up in the hospital waiting to hear the outcome of Kyle's car crash. This season was quite a rollercoaster of emotion. I'd be lying if I said I didn't binge watch the entire season in one day. This very Hallmark-esque show mixes heartwarming moments and dramatic turns. It had twists I didn't see coming. We follow Maddie and her new relationship. We follow Dana Sue and her navigation of wanting a new relationship, but not wanting to give up just yet on her marriage. We also follow Helen on her journey of IVF and trying her best to become a mother, while also doing her best to help Isaac find his birth mother.
While I already adored this show's first season, I fell more in love with it's sophomore season. You can catch Sweet Magnolias seasons one and two streaming on Netflix.
Author's note:
This show is also based on a book series by Sherryl Woods. And for those who loved Vampire Diaries, give this a watch. See if you can spot familiar landmarks as this show was filmed in the same town, Covington, Georgia.
