“What if we could change their fate?”
If you are a Marvel fan or someone who enjoyed Inception as well as the internal debate of whether or not your top was spinning, a.k.a what reality were you living in, Spiderman No Way Home is the film for you.
In true Marvel fashion, the rumours and hype began months before No Way Home was released. From leaked photos, late night talk show interviews, and typical, “Keep Tom Holland’s month shut,” audiences were left wondering if the multiverse, and sacred timeline being disrupted by Loki and Sylvie in the Loki series, would bring forth the return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire on the big screen reprising their roles as the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman.
If you still haven’t seen No Way Home, what are you waiting for? But, fair warning, there will be spoilers. You’ve been warned!
“Spiderman is real… Spiderman is real. Spiderman is Peter Parker”
-Mysterio
No Way Home opens where we were left off in Far From Home, with Mysterio having recorded a video stating Spiderman attacked him for no reason, leading to his death. Not only did this revelation shock all parties involved, Mysterio ended his video “unmasking” Spiderman to the world, revealing he is none other than high schooler Peter Parker.
Can a group of three superheroes from different universes, who typically fight their battles alone, come together to take on villains or visitors from different realms of the multiverse, while trying to protect the one’s that they love and cherish most. For the first time in the MCU, as the previews and trailers showcased, No Way Home not only brings back the two original Spidermen, but the audience also sees the return of villains from their respective realities or realms. Dr. Otto Octavious, the Green Goblin, and Electro, are only the beginning of who makes their return into the MCU.
As Marvel is known for ensuring the proper flow of the cinematic universe or the MCU through continuity and homage, No Way Home kept up appearances with various parallels occurring within the film as they relate back to other Marvel works. This can be seen in various scenes of No Way Home where Peter and the Green Goblin are fighting and Peter ends up on the Goblin’s shoulders continuing the fight sequence in a similar fashion to Natasha/Black Widow and Bucky/The Winter Soldier fighting in Captain America: Civil War.
Another fight sequence between the same two characters, mimics that of John in the Falcon and the Winter Solider with the violent shield/death scene, however, No Way Home had a different ending. With Captain America’s shield falling from Lady Liberty, it begs to question whether American has once again fallen.
As promised, Peter found his way back to Ned and MJ, but will he decide to tell them the truth rather than paying for his coffee and walking away? Is Peter taking a new approach where he is going to have MJ fall in love with Peter rather than Spiderman? Would this end the debate that within all three films “MJ” was with Peter because he is Spiderman? No Way Home allows audiences to think critically about the story in front of them as well as where this leads our characters and the rest of the MCU moving not only forward into the future but also into the past.
If you are looking for film that packs the action, drama, storytelling and provides comic relief in the form of Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman and Happy Hogan, Spiderman No Way Home just might be the film for you! You will laugh, be entertained, shocked and even shed a few tears in the latest Spiderman installment.
No Way Home can still be seen in some theatres and it was announced yesterday that audiences will soon be able to stream the third installment on Starz sometime in the near future.
