Double Down Netflix Original Movie Review: Texas Chainsaw Massacre & The Weekend Away

Updated: Jul 13, 2022

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

What happens when influencers purchase an abandoned town in hopes of making it a safe haven for anyone looking to get away from gun violence, hate crimes and more? If the title has Texas Chainsaw Massacre in it, it is safe to say poor decisions and an overly unnecessary bloodbath will ensue.

Leatherface makes his return in the 2022 Netflix installment of the TCM series, making it the 9th sequel to the series, although the plot remains the same throughout the entire series and the killer never ages but also never dies.

This film falls into the stereotypically rewashing of popular culture, where filmmakers and directors take a movie that has already been done and just changes locations, twists the story line slightly and tries to brand it as “new” when in reality it is the exact same movie with the exact same plot.

One thing I have never understood with horror movies is the sheer stupidity of people… there’s the car with the engine running, our escape… NO I’m going to run up the stairs of this creepy house. Or, I heard a noise… let’s go investigate. Maybe I’m just a big chicken, but I like to think and believe I would last fairly long in a horror movie. My biggest issue, though, with these types of horror movies (similar to Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc.), is the lack of unmasking the bad guy, or making sure they are dead, dead - not just not breathing, but physically cannot come back and kill us dead. If the main characters throughout the horror genre have basically been taught to play dead to avoid suspicion or alerting the killer, why does no one think that the killer can take the same “play dead” technique to get the upper hand in the scenario.

My advice if you ever find yourself in a horror movie type scenario… MAKE SURE THE KILLER IS DEAD! Also, maybe don’t trust the TESLA to get you to safety, (just saying).

If you love horror, jump scares, and don’t mind watching a copycat film, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is for you! If you’re squeamish and don’t handle blood very well… 100% give this a hard pass.

The Weekend Away

A weekend getaway to Croatia goes awry when a woman is accused of killing her best friend. In an attempt to clear her name, she uncovers not only the truth, but a painful secret.

Leighton Meester, star of the CW’s Gossip Girl, is back as Beth, a new mom who is travelling to Croatia with her college bestie, Kate who has recently broken up with her long-time boyfriend and is looking for one last hurrah with his credit cards.

After a night of drinking and partying, Beth wakes up to her friend missing, along with her memories from the night before, and a bloody kitchen. She befriends a local taxi driver and sets out on finding her friend and uncovering secrets along the way.

From police corruption, adultery and more, The Weekend Away is a great thriller that has plenty of twists and turns to keep the audience at the edge of their seats.

I would highly recommend this film for a rainy-day watch or when you find yourself about to rewatch a show for the 10th time.
